"Pedestal Bowl with French Balustrades" Pedestal bowl
Pedestal Bowl with French Balustrades Pedestal bowl

Thrown and turned bowl with a ring of clay thrown onto the bottom to create pedestal, hand cut into geometric shapes, the spiral additions are hand cut and applied in the leather hard stage. The inside decoration is a Clarice Cliff inspiration, the outside has celestial bodies and crossed leaves and flowers. The pedestal is like many railings on bridges and balconies in Europe.

I began making highly decorated bowls and vases and wanted to add more dimension to them with elements coming off the surface (spirals, leaf shapes, wings, etc.) Also the idea of something holding up and presenting the bowl appealed to me so I began with the idea of women holding up the form. This has evolved into other elements holding up pieces; i.e. elaborate banisters, circus type plinths, etc.
