— Artists Bebin Cypher and Paco Sutera infuse their pottery creations with a twin sense of dynamic color patterns and practical functionality — obvious traits in the couple’s exhibit, “Feats of Clay,” on display through Feb. 28 in the Rialto Theater Gallery in Aransas Pass.

The couple is well-known in art circles across the state and beyond for their meticulous porcelain works, which include dinnerware and teapots. Cypher and Sutera create pieces at their studio-home outside Wimberley, where they have lived since 1982. Both worked as production throwers in Europe — Cypher was a thrower in Spain; http://www.buyambienmed.com Sutera was a thrower in France.

“We like working with clay because it becomes dense,” Cypher said. “We like it because it’s the right body and it shows off the colors but it also makes for some durable, functional pottery.”

The couple’s exhibit includes shaped pottery such as dinner plates and trays and an assortment of more unusual pieces. Individual works for sale include tile, dinner plates and a 24-inch platter.

Cypher said while the couple works in the same studio, each artist creates his own piece. “Paco has a range of bowls that he’s been working on that are built out of slabs that we call ‘tripod bowls,’ ” Cypher said.

The pair share ideas and collaborate on projects.

“It’s kind of hard to tell the difference between our pieces now,” Cypher said. “We’ve been working together for almost 30 years. It’s helpful to have another person in the studio and we bounce our ideas off each another a lot.”
